Metaplanet denies selling $320M in Bitcoin, citing custody transfer
The company launched its BitBonds fixed-rate debt program as it said its Bitcoin holdings stay at 43,000 BTC.
Metaplanet pushed back on online claims that it sold Bitcoin after a large movement of funds between its wallets that drew attention in real time, with CEO Simon Gerovich saying the activity was a custody transfer rather than a sale, Decrypt reports.
Gerovich said Metaplanet transferred 5,014 BTC between its custodial addresses over the past 24 hours, adding that no Bitcoin was sold and that the firm’s holdings remain at 43,000 BTC. The CEO also pointed to the fact that Metaplanet publishes its Bitcoin addresses, which allows transfers to be tracked publicly.
The denial came as the Tokyo-listed company rolled out BitBonds, a fixed-rate debt program that is designed to help the firm raise capital. Metaplanet said the program could be used for future Bitcoin purchases and other corporate purposes, and that debt can provide cash without immediately issuing more shares or selling Bitcoin.
Decrypt notes that Metaplanet has continued building its treasury, buying 5,075 BTC in the first quarter of 2026 and another 1,005 BTC in June, bringing holdings to about 43,000 BTC, worth roughly $3 billion. The outlet also highlighted that the added borrowing would create payment obligations if Bitcoin declines.
