Putin visits Russia’s Kuril Islands, drawing a strong Japan protest

Japan said it strongly objected to the trip as tensions over the islands and regional security concerns continue to intensify following Russia’s 2022 Ukraine invasion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the far-eastern Kuril Islands for the first time on Thursday, prompting what Japan called a strong protest, according to SCMP Economy.

The visit renewed longstanding tensions between Russia and Japan over the islands, which Japan refers to as the Northern Territories and which were seized by the Soviet Union in 1945.

SCMP Economy reported that the Kremlin posted video of Putin on the islands, with Russian media saying he visited a fish-processing plant where he was served caviar.

Putin traveled to the Kurils after visiting nearby Sakhalin, where Russian navy drills were taking place, and he held a meeting on ensuring security of Russia’s eastern borders, while Japan said relations with Russia have worsened since the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
