Russia diesel exports fall to multiyear low as refinery attacks persist
Exports of diesel and gasoil averaged about 80,000 bpd in August 1 to 7, tightening middle-distillate supply more than crude supply as refinery throughput lags year-ago levels.
Russia’s diesel and gasoil exports collapsed in the first week of August, averaging about 80,000 barrels per day between August 1 and 7, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and cited by OilPrice. The outlet said the level marks a multiyear low for Russian shipments.
OilPrice attributes the drop to Moscow extending restrictions on diesel exports amid a fuel crisis linked to ongoing Ukrainian strikes on Russian refining infrastructure. The report says the drone campaign has kept many large processing sites offline since spring and summer, while demand is also peaking.
The tighter supply of middle distillates is weighing more than crude availability, the outlet said. OilPrice notes that Russia last year shipped as much as 1 million bpd of diesel and gasoil, highlighting the scale of the decline this year.
OilPrice also points to refinery utilization trends, citing the International Energy Agency. It said global refinery crude throughputs rose in July but still stayed nearly 5 million bpd below year-ago levels at 80.9 million bpd, with forecasts calling for throughputs to fall by an average of 2.5 million bpd in 2026 before rebounding by 3.5 million bpd in 2027.
