Syria says it will meet wheat demand without imports this year
The Syrian Grain Establishment received 2.7 million tonnes of wheat during the harvest, exceeding the country’s stated annual need of 2.55 million tonnes.
Syria has secured wheat self-sufficiency from this year’s harvest and expects it will not need imports after years of shortfalls, according to the Syrian Grain Establishment as reported by the Syrian News Agency, SANA.
The state grain agency said it collected 2.7 million tonnes of wheat across Syria during the harvest, which it stated is above the national annual requirement of 2.55 million tonnes.
The grain agency described a storage strategy to handle the larger volume and preserve quality, including transferring grain to silos and storage units and conducting regular fumigation to maintain it for extended periods.
The report also said Syria’s 2025 cereal production was estimated at 1.2 million tonnes, more than 60% below average, citing severe drought, economic pressure, and conflict-related disruptions, and noted Syria’s population is about 26 million.
