China confirms Y-20B can be converted into aerial refuelling tanker
The Y-20B tanker capability has been observed since at least 2022, when prototypes were spotted with in-flight refuelling pods.
China has confirmed that its Y-20B heavy transport aircraft can be converted into an aerial refuelling tanker, a move observers say could extend the operational reach of the PLA Air Force deeper into the western Pacific, according to SCMP Economy.
Aviation analyst Andreas Rupprecht told SCMP Economy that the refuelling capability had been tracked by observers since the third Y-20B prototype was seen with in-flight refuelling pods in January 2022.
Further supporting evidence emerged in April 2023, when the first Y-20B painted in standard military grey arrived at Kaifeng airbase with refuelling alignment markings, SCMP Economy reported.
