Ryanair flight window shattered after right engine fan blade failure
US investigators said a no 2 engine fan blade broke off shortly after takeoff on July 10, triggering cabin depressurization and an uneventful return landing in Thessaloniki.
A preliminary US investigation into a Ryanair flight incident found the shattering of a passenger window was caused by engine debris, after a fan blade detached shortly after takeoff on July 10.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the flight, operated by Ryanair subsidiary Malta Air and scheduled from Thessaloniki in Greece to Memmingen near Munich, experienced a No 2 right engine fan blade out failure during climb out from Thessaloniki international airport.
The investigation said the cabin depressurized, and the pilots chose to return to Thessaloniki, where they made an uneventful landing. Investigators also described a timeline that included a high vibration engine alert during climb, followed by reduced engine power and subsequent checks.
The passenger affected, Serbian entrepreneur Ljubisa Karović, was seated by the window and had his head and right arm sucked out of the broken window; he was kept from being completely pulled out when other passengers grabbed him, the report described.
