Hong Kong honors bomb-disposal and light housing teams with top award
The city says a 454 kg WWII bomb found at a Quarry Bay construction site last September was defused after a nine-hour operation.
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu presented the Chief Executive’s Award for Exemplary Performance to two interdepartmental teams at a ceremony on Friday, honoring a bomb-disposal unit and a unit behind the government’s light public housing scheme, according to SCMP Economy.
Lee praised the teams for professionalism and competence, saying their work built public trust through tangible results, including handling a wartime bomb and delivering efficiency and innovation in light public housing.
SCMP Economy reports the award recognizes meritorious and exemplary teams or individuals in the civil service, and it cites a September construction-site find in Quarry Bay: a WWII bomb weighing 1,000 pounds, or 454 kg, that contained 500 pounds of high explosives.
Police disabled the device after a nine-hour operation, with about 2,900 residents from 18 buildings evacuated during the response, SCMP Economy said.
