Hydropower tunnel in India collapses, killing at least seven workers
Officials said 12 people were rescued alive, while three others remained missing after a rush of water and debris entered the tunnel during construction.
A tunnel under construction at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, collapsed overnight, leaving at least seven workers dead, according to SCMP Economy citing officials.
SCMP Economy reported that 22 people were working in the tunnel, with 12 rescued alive and three still missing. The rescue effort began after a sudden rush of water and debris entered the tunnel late Thursday night.
Rescue teams including the national and state Disaster Response Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and fire services were searching for the remaining workers while dealing with rising water and debris, officials said.
SCMP Economy also noted that construction accidents are common in India, where rapid infrastructure growth can clash with fragile geology, construction lapses, extreme weather, and safety standards.
