Italian Eurofighter jets shoot down a drone in Latvian airspace

Latvia lifted an air alert after the interception, with emergency services operating at the crash site and no reported injuries or property damage.

A drone entered Latvian airspace and was shot down by Italian Eurofighter jets, according to Latvia’s military on Friday, as reported by SCMP Economy. Defence Minister Raivis Melnis said the shootdown decision was aimed at averting a threat to Latvia’s population.

Latvian authorities lifted an air alert after the drone was intercepted. Latvia’s military said the drone was shot down over a forested area, and a spokeswoman said emergency services were operating at the crash site.

There were no injuries or damage to property, the spokeswoman said on Latvian television. The military initially did not identify the drone’s origin, saying a foreign drone entered Latvian airspace as a result of Russia’s electronic warfare activity over the Balvi region.

The outlet reported that Latvia’s minister said it is not yet possible to determine the drone’s origin and type. Melnis added that drone debris would need to be found and examined before further conclusions can be drawn.
