Malaysia fuel oil cargo set for U.S. West Coast refinery in September
The planned shipment of more than 540,000 barrels arrives in early September, the first such supply from Malaysia in three years after tighter global feedstock flows linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
A tanker carrying Malaysian fuel oil is heading to a refinery on the U.S. West Coast and is expected to arrive in early September, according to tanker data tracked by MarineTraffic and reported by OilPrice citing Reuters sourcing.
The Solomon Sea departed from Malaysia last week, loaded with more than 540,000 barrels of low-sulfur and straight-run fuel oil (LSSR) from Petronas’ PRefChem refinery, a 300,000-barrel per day facility.
The cargo would be the first shipment from that Malaysian refinery to the United States since 2023, a shift tied to tighter global supply of refinery feedstock that has been pressured in recent months after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
OilPrice, citing Reuters, also notes that while U.S. refiners typically import fuel oil from nearby exporters such as Mexico and Venezuela, wide arbitrage and elevated refining margins have pulled supply from Malaysia, and refiners have been maximizing capacity utilization rates this summer as demand peaks seasonally.
