Record rain floods around Narita, leaving thousands stranded
Around 7,000 people were stranded at Narita, while Japanese authorities confirmed four deaths and deployed soldiers for relief as transport disruptions spread.
Record rainfall in Japan left thousands of travelers stranded at Tokyo Narita airport after flooding in the surrounding area disrupted transport, knocked out power to homes, and led to confirmed fatalities, according to Reuters.
Authorities said four deaths have been confirmed so far, including a man found floating on a flooded road and a woman found in a submerged car in Chiba prefecture, Reuters reported. The Chiba prefecture Disaster Management Office said a third death involved a person found collapsed on the street, and the fourth victim was of undetermined gender and age, Reuters added.
Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai called the situation extremely unusual even by Japan’s historical weather standards, and soldiers were sent to the area to support relief efforts, Reuters reported.
The transport disruption left about 7,000 people stranded at Narita, an airport spokesperson said, while all flights are scheduled to operate normally on Friday. Reuters also noted Japan Airlines warned some flights may experience delays, but no cancellations are currently expected.
