US crackdown leaves Chinese “birth tourists” uncertain about entry

A Los Angeles landlord said four Chinese pregnant tenants were denied entry over the past week, after social media reports of pregnant women being turned away at US border checkpoints.

Li, a woman in her late twenties from southwestern China, is anxious about her upcoming interview for a 10-year US visa, after US actions have thrown into doubt plans for a weeks-long trip next year and a later return while pregnant to pursue US citizenship for her child, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reported that Chinese social media has surfaced reports that pregnant women have been turned away at US border checkpoints in the past week, increasing uncertainty for prospective parents about whether their plans remain viable.

In the United States, the outlet said a Los Angeles landlord, a popular entry point for expectant parents, told it that four incoming tenants, Chinese and pregnant, were denied entry into the US over the past week.
