Alphabet stake in SpaceX is valued at about $94 billion

Alphabet said it invested $900 million in SpaceX in 2015, and its June-end holding was worth roughly 86.5 times that original amount.

Alphabet’s early investment in SpaceX has grown more than 100-fold, with Google disclosing a stake worth about $94 billion at the end of June, according to a Reuters analysis of publicly available filings.

The reporting also says Alphabet emerged as the largest institutional holder after SpaceX’s June initial public offering, which raised the visibility of positions held by early backers as the company moved from a closely held startup to a public company.

Alphabet’s 13F filing data showed it held 551.2 million SpaceX shares at quarter-end, valued at about $94.2 billion based on SpaceX’s June 30 share price of $170.86.

The analysis notes 13F data is filed quarterly and may not reflect trades since June 30, and it also says Alphabet’s early disclosed $900 million investment in 2015 provides a rare benchmark for comparing growth, while 13F filings do not show lockup terms or investors’ plans to realize profits.
