Brunei’s sultan strips royal title in public discipline case

Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah recently stripped his daughter-in-law of a royal title, prompting attention for a highly public example of discipline inside one of the world’s few remaining absolute monarchies, according to SCMP Economy.
An official announcement dated August 7 said Pengiran Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah’s conduct had tarnished the monarchy’s reputation and shown disrespect toward the sultan, Queen Saleha, and the royal family, but it did not include additional details.
SCMP Economy said analysts view the case as part of a broader test for Southeast Asia’s monarchies, focused on whether they can preserve authority by balancing tradition with adaptation as politics, institutions, and public expectations evolve.
