China publishes ecological reports on nine South China Sea features

The Ministry of Natural Resources said the 2025 early warning and monitoring bulletin is meant to support classified protection and management of island ecosystems.

China has published ecological assessment materials tied to nine disputed South China Sea islands and reefs, as its standoff with the United States over the region continues.

According to SCMP Economy, the Ministry of Natural Resources’ South China Sea Bureau released a 2025 marine ecological early-warning and monitoring bulletin, along with a separate marine ecological protection and restoration report, with the announcements made via the ministry’s official social media.

The reports, SCMP Economy said, highlighted the ecological conditions of the nine features to provide a basis for classified protection and management of island ecosystems.

SCMP Economy reported that the releases are arriving amid intensifying territorial disputes in the South China Sea, with China seeking to strengthen its control through environmental protection initiatives.
