Hong Kong’s Kai Tak draws 86,000-plus football fans, highlighting night economy

Merchants near Kai Tak Stadium said foot traffic during match nights was three to four times higher than usual, raising the question of whether spending can persist without headline events.

Hong Kong’s Kai Tak neighbourhood offered a snapshot of potential day-to-night growth after hosting major European fixtures, with more than 86,000 football fans passing through Kai Tak Stadium over two nights as Manchester City played Inter Milan and Chelsea faced Juventus.

According to SCMP Economy, supporters spilled into nearby malls and restaurants before and after the matches, and some merchants reported foot traffic three to four times higher than usual during the same period.

SCMP Economy said the key challenge is extending that match-day momentum into longer-term evening demand, since night-economy projects in the region suggest that big attractions alone do not automatically change consumer habits.

The outlet added that cities can program events, but maintaining a lived-in atmosphere and sustaining footfall beyond stadium crowds will be the deciding factor for Kai Tak’s future night economy.
