Modi announces free online coaching for competitive exams

The initiative follows nationwide protests tied to a leaked medical entrance exam and other recruitment scandals that contributed to the education minister’s resignation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government will provide free online coaching lessons for competitive examinations for young people, describing the program as a way to reduce costs for families facing India’s highly competitive education system.

Modi made the announcement from the ramparts of New Delhi’s Red Fort ahead of India’s Independence Day on August 15, 1947, according to Agence France-Presse.

The move comes after protests across the country that were sparked by the leak of a medical entrance exam paper and additional recruitment scandals, which the outlet said culminated in the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month.

SCMP Economy reports the unrest reflected broad frustration among young Indians about access to jobs and educational opportunities.
