Trump says Hormuz Strait could be declared U.S. territory

The strait typically handles about one fifth of the world’s seaborne oil supplies, while the U.S. is blockading Iranian shipping as Iran has refused to reopen the waterway.

Donald Trump said the U.S. could soon designate the Strait of Hormuz as “a territory of the United States,” adding that no ships would pass unless the U.S. allows it, according to the remarks reported by Guardian Business.

The comments came during a speech at a police academy on Long Island, as peace talks with Iran remain at an impasse and Iranian officials continue to refuse to reopen the strait, which has been effectively closed since the U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran in February.

Guardian Business reports that Trump’s statement followed the U.S. blockade of Iranian shipping and ports in recent months, aimed at increasing economic pressure on Tehran.

Iranian officials pushed back, with Iran’s deputy foreign minister telling X that Tehran would not be intimidated by U.S. threats and that the strait would open or close only under Iran’s authority, while Reuters reported that Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran has not decided to resume talks with the U.S. and that messages exchanged via Qatar and Pakistan do not amount to negotiations.
