WeRide targets Australia, Japan and Southeast Asia for robotaxi expansion
WeRide said it is in talks with regulators in Australia and plans to begin commercial right-hand-drive deployments in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide is looking to expand its robotaxi operations into Australia, South Korea, Japan and parts of Southeast Asia, its chief executive said on Thursday, as overseas expansion becomes a key growth lever for robotaxi providers competing for international footholds.
WeRide CEO Tony Han told Reuters the company is discussing Australia with regulatory authorities, and said it is also talking with European countries. The Guangzhou-based firm recently entered Denmark earlier in August, extending its European footprint to a sixth country.
The company said its autonomous vehicles now cover more than 60 cities across 13 countries. It also expects commercial deployments of its right-hand-drive robotaxi service to begin in Singapore and Hong Kong, with plans to hire locally and work with government officials and authorities.
WeRide reported that second-quarter overseas revenue rose 164% year over year, outpacing an 82% increase in total quarterly revenue, according to its Wednesday disclosure. The firm also said its EBITDA loss narrowed 8.1% year over year in the second quarter, and it targets positive cash flow in a single quarter by 2028, full-year break-even in 2029.
