Bangladesh says PM Rahman will not visit India until Hasina extradited

Bangladesh tied any trip to the creation of a more “propitious environment” for talks, after Dhaka’s repeated requests to extradite Sheikh Hasina from India.

Bangladesh said its prime minister designate, Tarique Rahman, will not travel to India until New Delhi extradites Sheikh Hasina, the former Bangladeshi premier who fled to neighboring India after a 2024 uprising, Agence France-Presse reports. Hasina faces the death penalty in Bangladesh after being convicted of crimes against humanity, the outlet said.

The countries have had a strained relationship since deadly anti-government protests brought down Hasina’s government and she remained in India, according to the report. Bangladesh has repeatedly sought her extradition, setting the condition for any possible Rahman visit.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, a foreign ministry official, A.K.M. Shahidul Karim, played down media speculation about a trip by Rahman to India next week. Karim said Bangladesh believes a “propitious environment” must be created before the visit can happen, the report added.
