China-led team hits 22% efficiency and beats silicon in field tests
The perovskite system ran at a 1-megawatt solar farm alongside a 3.5-megawatt silicon facility, and outperformed silicon over three months.
A China-led research team has cleared a key step toward commercializing perovskite solar panels, developing a super-stable coating and demonstrating performance at industrial scale, according to SCMP Economy.
In lab tests, a perovskite panel roughly the size of a dining table reached 22 percent efficiency, producing 158.4 watts while withstanding heat, humidity, and temperature extremes required for commercial use, the report said.
The researchers then validated the technology outdoors by installing a 1-megawatt perovskite system alongside a 3.5-megawatt silicon facility at the same solar farm. SCMP Economy reported that, after three months of monitoring, the perovskite system generated more electricity than the silicon system for the same installed capacity.
The field results showed perovskite beating silicon by 3.4 percent in March, 3.8 percent in April, and 5.8 percent in May, with the advantage widening as temperatures rose and sunlight strengthened, the outlet said.
