China urges unity around Xi as Jiang legacy is invoked ahead of October

A Chinese Communist Party research group has published an article invoking the legacy of former leader Jiang Zemin, urging support for President Xi Jinping’s leadership, according to an article carried by the party’s mouthpiece People’s Daily.

The piece, published as part of commemorations marking the centenary of Jiang’s birth, framed unity as important for confronting economic or geopolitical difficulties and cited past efforts to respond to “international emergencies” affecting China’s sovereignty and security.

It also linked the message to “accelerate” efforts to boost technological self reliance, describing the coming years as a key period for Beijing’s efforts to strengthen its role in global hi tech supply chains and seek an advantage over the United States.

The article said the renewed call for solidarity comes ahead of a key party meeting in October, ahead of next year’s party congress, where the leadership team is expected to see an extensive overhaul.
