Colombia asks Trump to suspend tariffs after deadly earthquake

Colombia’s new President Abelardo de la Espriella asked US President Donald Trump to temporarily suspend tariffs targeting Colombian products as the country responds to a deadly earthquake, Agence France-Presse reported.
The story said US tariffs on Colombian goods increased from 10.0% to 12.5% in late July, with some exceptions including coffee and oil. It added that the tariff increase took effect July 24, replacing a prior global duty that was set to expire.
De la Espriella said the request is meant to provide relief for business owners facing difficult conditions tied to the quake. The report also said he discussed the issue with Trump for about 10 minutes, with Trump expressing condolences over the deaths from Monday’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake.
