Hong Kong expands Northern Metropolis university town plans

The government has expanded the university town area to more than 1,000 hectares and is moving toward phased site tendering after receiving 19 proposals.

Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis University Town is moving beyond a planning concept as the government reportedly draws on lessons from overseas university town models, following site visits by a university town task force, according to SCMP Economy.

The plans include expanding the university town area to more than 1,000 hectares and taking in 19 proposals from local institutions.

The government is also moving toward phased site tendering and development, signaling a staged approach to how the project will be built out over time, the outlet said.

SCMP Economy frames the university town as a test of what Hong Kong’s higher education system is set to deliver as the broader environment for universities has shifted.
