University spinout Molendotech plans live water quality maps for UK and US
Molendotech said its app will combine daily E coli and bacteria test results with rain flow and tidal data, using artificial intelligence to build predictive models ahead of an October launch in both countries.
Molendotech, a University of Plymouth spinout behind a portable bacterial water testing kit, is developing an app designed to map water quality across Britain and the US in near real time. The company said it will collect data from daily tests that detect E coli and other bacteria, an approach aimed at reducing the wait for lab results.
Molendotech sells a handheld device that delivers results on the spot, avoiding the one to two day delay associated with laboratory testing, according to the outlet. The company is now working on software that also incorporates rain flow and tidal flows and uses artificial intelligence to generate predictive models.
The plan comes amid increasing calls for stronger water testing in the UK, with incidents of water pollution and sewage spills contaminating rivers and sea waters in popular areas. Surfers Against Sewage has received 164 reports of sickness this year from beachgoers, largely gastroenteritis plus other ear, skin, and related infections, according to The Guardian.
Molendotech’s chief scientific officer Simon Jackson said the goal is to give companies, individuals, or groups an easy, portable way to test water repeatedly on the same day. The company is targeting an October launch in the UK and US, the outlet reported.
