Dohrn cuts fleet insurance costs after switching to AI cameras

Dohrn said accidents have fallen almost 20% since converting its fleet to dual-facing event recorders roughly a year ago.

Dohrn, a Midwest LTL carrier, is using AI camera and event recorder data from Samsara to reduce its fleet risk, a move the company says is helping to control insurance costs. According to Yahoo Finance, Dohrn finished converting its fleet to dual-facing event recorders about a year ago, and it reported that accidents have fallen almost 20% since the change.

The carrier’s CEO, Robert Howard, told FreightWaves that the decision was driven internally rather than by insurers. Howard said insurance costs are rising, but that pricing is based on the company’s experience, and improved safety outcomes from the data are part of the approach.

Dohrn also linked the technology to faster and more certain claims handling, saying video helps remove guesswork in decisions about fault and whether to settle. The company said customers increasingly evaluate safety alongside price, including in its RFP conversations.

Dohrn’s relationship with Samsara began in 2016 when it bought the system to meet the ELD mandate. Yahoo Finance said what followed extended beyond compliance, with the technology increasingly used to improve day-to-day safety and claims resolution.
