Ferrari Luce electric car sells for $40m in charity auction
The custom Ferrari Luce sold for more than 35 times its usual price at RM Sotheby's, and all proceeds will go to the Ferrari Foundation's education programs.
Ferrari's first-ever electric car, the Luce, sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby's in California in a charity auction, setting a record for a new vehicle sold at auction, BBC Business reported.
The auction price was more than 35 times the usual value of the car, with Sotheby's saying all proceeds will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation's educational programmes; the auction house did not disclose the buyer.
The Luce was launched in May and drew backlash from some commentators who said it departed from Ferrari's traditional design identity, including criticism around it being battery-powered and having five seats.
Ferrari's shares fell the day after the Luce launch following the backlash, and the story noted that the Ferrari Foundation charity effort follows other high-profile sales, including a bespoke Ferrari Daytona SP3 supercar that raised $26 million in 2025 for education initiatives.
