India defence index hits fresh high as defence stocks extend gains

The Nifty India Defence Index climbed for a fourth straight session, nearly 3% over the period, after breaching its prior peak in mid August.

India’s defence stocks extended their rally, with the Nifty India Defence Index rising 1% to a fresh intraday high of 9,912.75 on the NSE, and advancing for a fourth consecutive session. LiveMint Markets said the index gained nearly 3% over the four sessions and that it surpassed its earlier peak of 9,784.60 set on June 23, 2026, after topping it on August 13, 2026.

The strength in the sector came alongside recent earnings. LiveMint Markets reported that Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) posted a 14.9% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹1,589.68 crore for the June quarter of FY27, with revenue from operations up 14.4% year-on-year to ₹5,515.17 crore.

LiveMint Markets also highlighted other defence names, including Bharat Electronics (BEL), where consolidated net profit rose 8.2% year-on-year to ₹1,048 crore. It said BEL’s sequential net profit declined 52.4% from ₹2,203 crore in the March quarter.

The article noted Bharat Dynamics showed a sharp profitability turnaround, with standalone net profit up 547% year-on-year to ₹119 crore in the first quarter of FY27, compared with ₹18 crore in the same quarter of the prior fiscal year. LiveMint Markets added that on a sequential basis, net profit increased 5% from ₹113 crore in Q4 FY26.
