India’s chief economic adviser urges return of lower-ethanol E10 fuel
The adviser said adding E10 alongside E20 could address vehicle-performance concerns while reducing ethanol use and helping protect the current vehicle fleet during any retrofit changes.
India’s government should consider reintroducing a lower-ethanol fuel option, E10, the country’s chief economic adviser said, citing concerns that the current E20 blend could damage older vehicles and two-wheelers.
OilPrice reports that India rolled out E20 last year to cut crude oil imports and reduce pollution, but the adviser warned that calls for additional fuel options have grown as manufacturers and drivers raise questions about performance.
In an opinion piece published in The Indian Express on Monday, V Anantha Nageswaran said restoring E10 at pumps alongside E20 could calm public concerns, lower total ethanol use rather than increase it, and protect the existing fleet while a retrofit program catches up.
The E20 rollout is linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to reduce pollution and lower gasoline and diesel content, with the goal of decreasing crude oil imports, though India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas last month ruled out offering E0 or E10 alongside E20.
