Chinese mothers spend nearly 30,000 yuan on “parent awakening camps”
The programmes, promoted on mainland social media, offer certified-counsellor courses or higher-priced schemes that critics say exploit parental anxiety.
Controversial “parent awakening camps” are drawing anxious Chinese parents, with reports saying some participants are spending close to 30,000 yuan for help tackling issues including gaming addiction and weak academic performance.
According to SCMP Economy, the camps are promoted by family-education services on mainland social media and come in two main models, including traditional courses and lectures led by certified counsellors.
The outlet reported that other offerings are more expensive and have faced criticism for allegedly using misleading claims and relying on instructors that some observers say are not qualified.
SCMP Economy cited an example from Shandong province, where a mother identified as Zhang Ruilian invested nearly 30,000 yuan in a programme branded as a “Wise Parents Awakening Camp,” as part of efforts to improve parenting practices and ease family strain.
