Sensex drops as Nifty falls, midcaps and smallcaps outperform

The Nifty ended a fifth straight losing day, down 1.2% over the prior five sessions, while investors rotated toward mid and small-cap stocks.

India's benchmark Sensex and Nifty 50 both finished lower on Monday, Aug. 17, as investors weighed stronger-than-expected Q1FY27 earnings against ongoing geopolitical risks, LiveMint Markets reported.

The Sensex fell 281 points, or 0.36%, to 77,728.16, while the Nifty 50 ended down 78 points, or 0.32%, at 24,287.65.

Market breadth leaned toward decliners, with 2,350 stocks down on the BSE among 4,674 traded. In the Nifty, 31 stocks declined, including HCL Tech, Infosys, Sun Pharma, and TCS, which each fell between 2% and 2.6%.

Mid- and small-cap segments outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 up 0.05% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 up 0.36%. Geojit Investments' Vinod Nair said energy-led input cost pressures weighed on near-term sentiment, but stronger Q1FY27 earnings could support earnings upgrades, even as higher-cost replenishment may be a margin risk in Q2FY27.
