Japan hotels offer sleep tourism packages with tea and sleep diagnosis

Hotel 1899 Tokyo is using a guest questionnaire to match visitors with tea blends, pillows, and bath salts aimed at improving sleep quality.

Hotels in Japan are increasingly rolling out “sleep tourism” experiences, with stays designed to help guests get better, more restful sleep, according to SCMP Economy.

The approach, illustrated by Hotel 1899 Tokyo in the Shimbashi business district, starts with guests answering a set of questions on a leaflet to receive a “sleep diagnosis,” then being served a personalized cup of blended tea, such as combinations of chamomile and Mimasaka bancha, based on their sleep type.

Rooms are also set up to support sleep, with high-performance pillows and bath salts, plus an additional cup of relaxing tea offered before bedtime. The hotel said it is aiming to make the most of sleep, which it described as a significant part of guests’ stays.

SCMP Economy also cited JTB Tourism Research & Consulting senior consultant Kanae Usui, who said the trend is being driven by widespread dissatisfaction with sleep quality and a growing preference among travelers for health-related experiences.
