Qatar mediation waits for Iran and Oman Hormuz deal before US talks
The Strait of Hormuz is described as a chokepoint for almost 20% of global energy supply, and oil prices showed no immediate reaction to Oman’s comments, with WTI holding near $84.00.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said mediators are waiting for Iran and Oman to reach a bilateral agreement on the Strait of Hormuz before moving back to broader United States, Iran talks, according to FXStreet. The spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, said the Hormuz step is a key part of restarting the wider diplomatic process.
FXStreet reports that the invitation for an Iranian delegation to visit on a pilots issue remains open, though Iran has not responded. It added that Iran and Qatar are in direct contact on the pilots matter, and that Iran’s request for involvement by the ICRC was characterized as a media ploy by Qatar’s side.
On the energy-market angle, FXStreet said there has been no immediate reaction in oil prices to remarks from Oman about the Iran-Oman discussions. At press time, WTI oil was near $84.00, after gains earlier in the week, with the outlet also reiterating that WTI is a widely used benchmark for the crude oil market.
