Social Security COLA projected to rise 3.6% in 2027
The Senior Citizens League estimates average monthly benefits could climb about $69.75 to $2,007.28, and the official figure will be announced Oct. 14 based on July to September CPI-W data.
The Senior Citizens League projects a 3.6% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, which would raise average monthly benefits by about $69.75, from $1,937.53 to $2,007.28, according to HousingWire. The official 2027 COLA will be announced Oct. 14, using the average change in the CPI-W, the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, over July, August, and September. The July CPI-W was reported at a 3.4% annual increase, and the projection implies inflation could move modestly higher over the next two months.
HousingWire reports that energy costs and ongoing inflation dynamics could affect the final COLA percentage, and that the projection is designed to avoid overreacting to month-to-month inflation swings. The executive director of the Senior Citizens League, Shannon Benton, pointed to inflation movements earlier in the year, including a rise from 2.2% in January to 4.4% in May before easing to 3.5% in June.
If the 3.6% estimate becomes official, it would be the largest COLA in four years. HousingWire notes the 2027 projection is down slightly from a prior 3.9% estimate released in May, and that the last COLAs were 2.8% in 2026, 2.5% in 2025, and 3.2% in 2024.
