Astrodome Conservancy asks developers for redevelopment ideas
Submissions are due Sept. 8, and the conservancy says it is seeking concepts that are creative, feasible, and financially viable within Reliant Park's operating structure.
The Astrodome Conservancy has issued a request for information seeking redevelopment ideas from developers, investors, and operators, as well as other stakeholders with experience in large-scale mixed-use and adaptive reuse projects.
The nonprofit said it wants respondents to help shape a shared vision for the Astrodome by submitting creative, feasible, and financially viable concepts, with a submission deadline set for Sept. 8.
The Astrodome closed to the public in 2009 and sits next to Reliant Stadium, where the Houston Texans play, within the Reliant Park complex. The conservancy noted that earlier reuse proposals, including a theme park and museum, have not surfaced with viable funding sources that would fit Reliant Park's operational structure.
The request comes as the project landscape has evolved, including a prior Harris County approved plan in 2018 that faced budget concerns and was put on hold in 2019. The conservancy also referenced its Astrodome Vision project developed with Gensler, and recent estimates that restoring the building for basic functionality would cost more than $750M, while demolition was estimated at $55M.
