Commercial insurance renewal rate increases ease across most lines in Q2

Ivans Index data showed umbrella liability slowed to 7.9% from 9.4% in Q1, while workers' compensation was the only line still moving higher, though it stayed negative.

Commercial insurance renewal rate increases cooled in the second quarter of 2026 across nearly all major commercial lines, according to the Ivans Index, a tracker of average premium renewal rate change across the industry’s major commercial lines.

Umbrella liability insurance saw the sharpest slowdown, with its average renewal rate change falling to 7.96% in Q2 from 9.36% in Q1. Workers’ compensation was the exception, with its average rate change ticking up to -1.37% in Q2 from -1.73% in Q1, but remaining in negative territory.

Commercial auto’s average renewal rate increase slipped to 4.93% in Q2 from 5.28% in Q1. The line’s pace started the quarter at 5.24% in April and eased to 4.58% by June, before Ivans reported July renewal rates at 4.03%.

Other lines tracked by Ivans also moderated: BOP renewal rates averaged 6.16% in Q2 versus 6.74% in Q1, general liability averaged 5.44% versus 6.85%, and commercial property averaged 6.40% versus 6.83%. July figures continued that pattern, with Ivans reporting declines for each of those lines into the month.
