Kim Yo-jong denies Ukraine claim that North Korea will send more troops

Zelensky said the number could reach 50,000, while North Korea’s Kim Yo-jong called the allegation groundless and pointed to U.S. and Western responsibility for the war's continuation.

North Korea’s Kim Yo-jong denied claims by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Pyongyang planned to send up to 50,000 additional troops to Russia, according to a statement carried by state media KCNA, as Reuters reported via SCMP Economy.

In her response, Kim Yo-jong described Zelensky’s estimate as groundless and characterized it as a self-staged incident, Reuters added. She also said responsibility for the outbreak and the prolongation of the Ukraine crisis lies with the United States and the West.

Zelensky made the claim on social media this month and urged South Korea to provide support for Ukraine’s air defenses, Reuters reported.

Reuters also said North Korea sent an estimated 14,000 soldiers to Russia’s Kursk region in 2024, under a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty agreed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s June 2024 visit to Pyongyang.
