Toa Re profit jumps 34.9% despite slight drop in premiums
Ordinary profit rose to ¥51.0 billion for fiscal 2026, while net premiums written edged down 0.9% to ¥273.4 billion.
Japan’s Toa Re reported higher consolidated profitability for the year ended March 31, 2026, even as premium revenue slipped slightly.
Ordinary profit increased 34.9% to ¥51.0 billion ($319.0 million) for fiscal 2026 versus ¥37.8 billion in 2025, while net income attributable to the parent rose 37.9% to ¥39.3 billion ($245.6 million). Net premiums written fell 0.9% to ¥273.4 billion ($1.71 billion), down from ¥275.9 billion a year earlier.
The company said its capital and returns improved, with its capital ratio strengthening to 36.25% from 30.94% in 2025, an increase of 5.31 percentage points. Return on equity rose to 10.12% from 9.04%, up 1.08 percentage points.
In its regional operations, Toa Re America reported largely stable gross premiums at $520.4 million, while net premiums written rose 2.1% to $390.1 million; pre-tax net income jumped 85.4% to $51.6 million. Toa Re Europe saw gross premiums decline 6.4% to CHF248.3 million and net premiums fall 8.3% to CHF225.5 million, but pre-tax net income rose 15.5% to CHF31.1 million, and after-tax net income increased 45.3% to CHF25.7 million, according to Reinsurance News.
