US urged to build national data strategy as China commercializes data

A US congressional advisory body warned that ceding global leadership on data standards could put US firms at a disadvantage as data becomes central to AI and robotics.

China is deepening the commercial use of its large data resources, and a key US congressional advisory body says the United States needs a national strategy that treats data as an economic asset to stay competitive in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, according to a report published Tuesday by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

The USCC warned that the US risks losing global influence over setting international data standards to China, a shift it said would give Chinese firms an advantage over US counterparts in industries where data is a core input to development.

The commission also cautioned that once standards are adopted, they are difficult to revise, adding that engaging on standards now would be more effective than trying to unwind an established approach later.

Vincent Chow in Washington for SCMP Economy covered the commission's findings.
