GnosisDAO approves shift to retire Gnosis Chain standalone L1

The plan would unlock about 350,000 staked GNO, or roughly 27% of circulating supply, and move the chain to Ethereum settlement every block.

GnosisDAO has approved a proposal to retire Gnosis Chain’s standalone Layer 1 and convert it into a zero-knowledge-proven Ethereum Economic Zone rollup under GIP-153, with settlements occurring directly on Ethereum every block, according to CryptoSlate.

The change would eventually end Gnosis Chain’s independent validator set and have security inherited from Ethereum validators. It would also unlock about 350,000 GNO currently staked, equivalent to roughly 27% of the token’s circulating supply, making those tokens liquid again and removing their current role in securing the network.

GNO rose about 10% to around $136 after the governance vote, marking its highest level since May, the outlet reported with data from CryptoSlate. CryptoSlate also noted the approval is a direction-level mandate rather than a final launch decision.

The first EEZ version is targeted for around December 2026 or January 2027, depending on infrastructure readiness. Gnosis said it will need to rethink GNO’s economics after staking disappears, with GIP-153 estimating a model dilution of non-stakers of about 2.3% annually, and the network considering how to align GNO with rollup-generated revenue.
