Hong Kong to cut vehicle licence renewals to one day with AI
The Transport Department expects the AI system to automatically process over 90% of online renewals and begin handling applications by year-end.
Hong Kong drivers will be able to renew their vehicle licences in about one day by the end of this year, down from processing times of up to 10 working days, under a new artificial intelligence approval system announced by the Transport Department, according to SCMP Economy.
The “Easy Licence Application Approval” system will use large language models to automatically recognize, cross-check, and verify documents submitted with online applications, with more than 90% of online vehicle licence renewals expected to be automatically processed.
The department said the AI system will also handle applications under the Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles and Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles schemes, targeting an automatic approval rate above 50% and reducing manual processing time by 20%.
SCMP Economy reported that the projects will be carried out under the AI Efficacy Enhancement Team, formed after the 2025 Policy Address to coordinate government AI adoption and advance transport goals, while noting that 63% of international driving permit applications and 51% of full driving licence renewals are already submitted online.
