Jim Rhyner appointed to lead AXIS’ North America financial lines

Rhyner will start Aug. 31, succeeding John Van Decker after a planned leadership transition at AXIS.

AXIS Capital Holdings Limited said it has appointed Jim Rhyner to lead its North America financial lines, programs, and Canada business. Rhyner will take the role on Aug. 31 and report to Mike McKenna, head of North America, with his work based out of AXIS’ Short Hills, New Jersey office.

According to Insurance Journal, Rhyner joins AXIS from The Hartford, where he most recently served as global head of financial lines. His prior leadership experience includes roles across Navigators, Chubb, Avreco, and AIG.

AXIS said the appointment follows a planned leadership transition, with John Van Decker retiring after more than four decades at the company, including 15 years with AXIS. The insurer added that Rhyner will develop and execute the strategy for the businesses under his remit, support growth and diversification of AXIS’ insurance portfolio, and lead efforts to deepen relationships with brokers, clients, and other stakeholders while advancing innovation.

Insurance Business also reported that Rhyner brings more than two decades of financial lines leadership across The Hartford, Navigators, Chubb, and AIG.
