Netanyahu targets Turkey after airstrikes hit a Syrian base near its border
The strikes followed Netanyahu’s claims that Turkey was seeking a military foothold in northern Syria, amid strained Israel-Turkey relations over Gaza and earlier flotilla incidents.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing a difficult re-election fight, highlighted Turkey as a key concern after warplanes bombed a base in northern Syria located a short drive from the Turkish border, according to a report by Agence France-Presse via SCMP Economy.
The outlet said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been a vocal critic of Israel’s offensive in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, and that ties have deteriorated further as Israel has intercepted Turkish activist flotillas attempting to deliver aid into Gaza.
Unlike some other countries Netanyahu has taken aim at in the region, the report noted that Turkey has powerful allies. It is a Nato member, and Erdogan maintains a warm relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump.
SCMP Economy also said Trump’s ambassador in Ankara condemned the strikes against the Syrian base.
