New York City targets 9.5% housing growth on Staten Island over five years
The draft Fair Housing Growth Strategy calls for about 17,675 new homes across Staten Island and frames where growth should occur within North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is pushing a draft growth plan aimed at increasing housing supply on Staten Island, targeting 9.5% growth in new homes over the next five years, or about 17,675 homes across the borough, according to a strategy released by the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
Commercial Observer reports the plan segments Staten Island into North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore, noting that the South Shore and Mid-Island are the least dense areas. It also flags that residents and elected officials in the South Shore have historically resisted additional residential development.
City planning and housing officials said the strategy is intended to provide a framework for measuring housing need and guiding where the city should grow, with fair housing at the center of the approach. Sideya Sherman, director of the Department of City Planning, said the draft sets out how the city can track and understand demand as part of its broader Block by Block housing effort.
The draft also extends beyond Staten Island, outlining a strategy for all five boroughs as the city seeks to address its housing crisis. Commercial Observer reports that the HPD estimates New York will need to add about 700,000 homes over the next decade to significantly combat the shortage.
