Grain exports plunge as strikes hit Ukraine and Russia port infrastructure

Ukraine grain exports have fallen about 75% in recent weeks after attacks on Black Sea and Danube ports, and Russia’s August 2026 wheat exports are tracking toward a decade low of 3.1 million to 3.4 million tonnes.

World Grain notes that as the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, intensified attacks this summer have increasingly targeted grain-related assets in both countries, adding to disruption in a sector that underpins global food supplies.

According to World Grain, strikes on Ukraine’s Black Sea and Danube ports have driven grain exports down by roughly 75% in recent weeks. The outlet also cites estimates that wartime agricultural damages in Ukraine have surpassed $90 billion, with direct annual sector losses reaching up to $3 billion and a projected grain storage deficit of 11 million tonnes.

World Grain says the conflict has broadened beyond earlier impacts on Ukraine’s grain industry, with Russia’s port and related infrastructure facing increased risk as Ukraine targets terminals this summer. It adds that Russian wheat exports for August 2026 are tracking toward a decade low of 3.1 million to 3.4 million tonnes, and that Russian authorities are considering equipping civilian grain carriers in the Sea of Azov with military-grade defensive equipment.

The outlet concludes that even with other major exporters attempting to fill the supply gap, higher grain prices and increased food insecurity for net grain importing nations are likely to persist. It also points to weather problems affecting two of the world’s largest wheat producers and exporters, which could further increase uncertainty for the market.
