Japanese lawmakers set Beijing visit for Aug. 24-27 amid stalled ties
The reported trip is a semi-official diplomatic effort routed through a non-core channel of Japan lawmakers, with Chinese experts saying it is unlikely to drive a broader thaw.
SCMP Economy reports that a delegation of Japanese lawmakers is scheduled to travel to Beijing from August 24 to 27, the first such trip after bilateral relations soured in a bitter chill about 10 months ago.
The visit would include members from Japan’s lower house, with reported talks to confirm meetings with officials from the Communist Party’s diplomatic arm, according to multiple Japanese outlets.
Chinese experts quoted by SCMP Economy said the trip carries largely symbolic weight and would proceed through a “semi-official” diplomatic effort via a non-core executive channel, rather than indicating a formal mandate from Japan’s top political or foreign policy leadership.
SCMP Economy also notes there was no public information showing that Japan’s foreign ministry, the LDP leadership, or then-Prime Minister Fumio Takaichi’s office issued a formal mandate for the delegation.
