Russia conducts missile test near Japan-claimed Northern Territories

The test, using the Bastion system deployed on Etorofu, simulated an attack on enemy vessels and hit targets at a range of at least 300 km.

Russia’s Pacific Fleet said it conducted a missile test off a group of islands that are held by Russia but claimed by Japan, as tensions rise over the disputed territory after President Vladimir Putin’s first-ever visit there last week, according to SCMP Economy.

Putin visited Etorofu Island on August 13, part of the four islands Japan calls the Northern Territories and Russia calls the Southern Kurils, and Russia’s foreign ministry later summoned Japan’s ambassador, Akira Muto, after Japan protested the trip.

The fleet said the test involved a unit equipped with the Bastion surface-to-ship missile system, which is deployed to Etorofu, and that the guided missile cruiser Varyag and the Omsk nuclear-powered submarine took part.

SCMP Economy reported that the naval fleet said the missile test simulated an attack on enemy vessels and succeeded in hitting all intended targets at a range of at least 300 km.
