Samsung raises prices for advanced chipmaking services by up to 15%
The hikes apply to new orders for Samsung’s advanced processes, with SF4 prices in China and the U.S. raised 10% to 15% and SF5 wafers up 10% to 15%, as AI chip demand tightens capacity.
Samsung Electronics has raised prices for some advanced contract chipmaking services by up to 15% for new orders, according to two sources familiar with the matter cited by Reuters. The increase comes as demand for AI chips tightens supply in a market long dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
Reuters reports the strongest demand has come from Chinese customers, many of whom are accepting the steepest increases. The sources said Samsung still cannot fulfill all orders because it must serve U.S. customers and reserve part of its capacity to support its own chip production, while U.S. export curbs on advanced chipmaking equipment to China have increased reliance on overseas foundries.
The price hikes cover Samsung’s 4-nanometre process, known as SF4, which Samsung raised in July. One source said SF4 prices for customers in China and the U.S. were increased 10% to 15% from the previous month, while customers in Taiwan saw increases of 5% to 10%.
For Samsung’s 5-nanometre process, SF5, Reuters said wafer prices rose 10% to 15%, and for its older 8-nanometre technology prices rose by nearly 10%. Samsung did not comment, and the Reuters report notes the foundry business has been a loss maker since 2022, according to industry estimates.
