Tesla to recall nearly 3 million cars in China over door-handle issue
Tesla said it will add warning labels to internal door handles starting September 25 and will push an over-the-air software update to lower windows after a collision.
Tesla has announced what it called the largest-ever product recall in mainland China’s electric vehicle market, covering nearly 3 million cars over a door-handle safety issue, according to SCMP Economy.
The recall follows steps by Chinese regulators to move toward a ban on retractable car door handles due to safety concerns, after a fatal incident last year in which a driver was left trapped inside a burning vehicle.
SCMP Economy reports that from September 25, Tesla will install warning labels on its cars’ internal door handles after the vehicles are recalled. The company will also conduct an over-the-air update to its window-control software intended to lower a car’s windows after a collision.
In Shanghai, SCMP Economy cited a local car maintenance operator, who said the door problem has drawn more attention from regulators and passengers since late last year as safety concerns have grown.
