China’s telecom firms push billable AI tokens to spur growth

China Telecom said intelligent computing revenue jumped 95% in the first half, while Unicom reported a 13% rise in computing-power revenue across data centers and cloud AI.

China’s three state-owned telecoms companies, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, are placing billable AI tokens at the center of their growth plans as AI adoption expands and computing demand rises, according to their first-half financial disclosures covered by SCMP Economy.

The companies described token usage as a key metric alongside compute power and data, with China Telecom reporting a 95% surge in intelligent computing revenue during the first half of the year and a 7.1% increase in its broader “intelligent business” revenue to 31.1 billion yuan, or about US$4.6 billion.

SCMP Economy reported that China Telecom also said its China Telecom Cloud revenue rose 7.8% to 61.8 billion yuan, and that it upgraded Xirang, its orchestration software for compute resources and networks, to extend support to more than 20 chip architectures.

China Unicom, which reported earnings on Tuesday, posted 41.9 billion yuan in computing-power revenue, a 13% increase, and pointed to its “token supermarket” and UniAI platform, which it said connects more than 200 large language models and collected over 500 terabytes of high-quality data.
